thunder
the swollen river cascades
into the gorge

Blackwater Falls State Park

My 1st original haiku; be kind. To my novice understanding I think this is a "Comparison" - the fragment portion of the haiku, thunder, is compared to the phrase portion (the 2nd & 3rd lines) - but what do I know. Also tried a play on words with the double meaning of "cascades" (n. & v.). Traditional haiku have a season word; my haiku originally read "swift river" but I changed swift to swollen to suggest spring.

I'm working on a revision (beyond stones for tablets - a wooden Japanese marker of the time) to eliminate the gerund (growing). My aim is to use present tense verbs.

a mist settles
over a tiny isle of pines....
hide-and-seek

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH lakes region

(My adaptation of 3 haiku by Issa, 19th century Japan, below)

darkness settles                                      peeking in, peeking out
over a tiny isle of pines....                       of the mist....
                                a skylark singing                                     Mount Tsukuba

                                                               island of pines --
                                                               while mist turns dark
                                                               a skylark singing
